Wikimania 2024 Social Media

As the Social Media Manager for Wikimania 2024, I was responsible for planning, creating, and publishing content across official event channels to promote the 19th annual Wikimania conference. Held in Katowice, Poland from 7–10 August 2024, the event brought together hundreds of Wikimedians from around the world to celebrate free knowledge. I managed multilingual communications, coordinated live coverage, and helped engage the global community before, during, and after the event.

„Jan has been a very valuable team member. We worked together for over a year on an event that gathered over 2500 attendees from 143 countries – Wikimania 2024. Jan was responsible for designing and executing a communications strategy (focusing on social media) before and during the event.“ – Maciej Artur Nadzikiewicz, Board Member, Wikimedia Foundation

Summer Film School Media Workshop

Students at the journalism workshop organized by the national news agency, ČTK, at the Summer Film School (LFŠ) in Uherské Hradiště in late July had the chance to experience field reporting firsthand. Under the guidance of ČTK professionals, journalism and media students populated the festival website with articles and photos, recorded the Četkast na Filmovce podcast, and helped moderate debates.

„I really enjoyed the wide variety of events we photographed – from film intros and gallery openings to capturing the general atmosphere and evening DJ sets. I truly appreciated the direct feedback from Petr Mlch, the Editor-in-Chief of the ČTK Photobank, who gave us specific advice on how to improve each of our photos,“ said Beránek. Under the guidance of Martina Vašíčková, Director of the ČTK Academy, he also recorded a podcast with Ondřej Provazník, the director of the film Broken Voices.

Out of Checklist

'Out of Checklist' (original title 'Jen tak mimochodem') is the name of the feature film based on the original screenplay by Roman Němec. It's the story of twelve-year-old David - a hyper-rational, highly intelligent boy who needs to have everything organized, needs to feel like he's always in control, hates chaos and takes the weight of any unresolved problem very hard. When he finds himself in a stressful situation, he tends to solve it to restore balance, but of course in his own way. What happens when his weekend plans are unexpectedly and completely radically disrupted?

It's finally Friday. Even-numbered weekend. That means a weekend with dad. I like weekends with my dad, even though he's weird and still thinks at thirty-five he'll break through as a pop-rock star. At least I have someone to go to. It's going to be a great weekend. Maybe. Maybe not, because with Dad things often go wrong. But I have this weekend under control. Or not?

WHERE BUTTERFLIES DON'T FLY

A withdrawn and bullied teenage boy and his quietly gay teacher get trapped in a cave complex on a school camping trip and must find their way out.

Where Butterflies Don't Fly is the name of the feature film based on the original screenplay by Roman Němec. The story, unique in its theme and environment, begins in the quiet Czech town of Kadaň. However, when the main characters are accidentally caught in an unknown, mysterious, but also insidious space of a vast cave system, the story quickly becomes dramatic.

Daniel is an odd guy who lives with his endlessly quarrelling parents uncomplaining about his destiny. He keeps a distance from other people, he has no friends, nobody understands him, he is different. Adam is his class teacher. He is gay who lives in a relationship with his younger partner David and his strictly guarded secret keeps locked behind a door of their apartment. Lost in the darkness, cut off from the rest of the world, they are both looking for a way out. How far will they be willing to go?

„Jan Beránek served as a crew member during the filming of the feature film Where Butterflies Don’t Fly (05–08/2020), as well as on various commercial film projects (2022), holding the positions of Production Assistant and Second Assistant Camera. Throughout these productions, he demonstrated a strong command of film equipment, an ability to quickly master new skills, and the capacity to handle unpredictable situations under pressure. Jan is systematic, responsible, and reliable, performing consistently well both on independent tasks and within a team environment.“ – Roman Němec, Director, Where Butterflies Don't Fly
